Random heterogeneous materials are described from a statistical point of view on the level of continuum mechanics. Of interest are the effective dielectric constant, effective conductivity, effective rate coefficient for diffusion-controlled reactions, and effective elastic constants of disordered materials. Such effective properties can be evaluated approximately by mean field methods. The relation of these methods to more detailed statistical theory will be discussed.
