T-cells (cell responsible for adaptive immune response) can be activated by few foreign peptides, but ignore thousands of endogenous peptides. The molecular origin of this ideal discrimination mechanism is still a mystery but it is know that it results in longer binding of foreign peptides to T-cell receptors (TCR). The model explains why the T-cell stimulation by few foreign peptides with TCR half binding time of 20 s. results in much stronger signal than stimulation by 30000 of endogenous peptides with TCR half binding time of 3s.
