The relaxation of thermal fluctuations in the relative concentration, i.e. composition of two labelled components in a many-component mixture of colloidal particles is commonly referred to as the interdiffusion or exchange diffusion process. We will explore interdiffusion in mixtures of colloidal spheres. Explicit analytic results are obtained and discussed for the interdiffusion coefficient of semi-dilute binary hard-sphere systems, with and without hydrodynamic interactions included, in comparison with results from mode-mode coupling theory calculations. The question will be addressed whether the interdiffusion coefficient can be expressed solely in terms of the self-diffusion coefficients of the individual components.
