Mathematical modelling of biological growth

Examples of growing biological tissues and bodies and different types of biological growth will be given. Results of own experiments on growing plant leaves and roots will be presented and principles of biological growth will be summarized. Control over the optimal reinforcement of the growing tissues, optimal geometry and interconnection between form and function will be discussed. An overview of mathematical models of biological growth including lumped-parameter, multi-phase and quasi one-phase models will be done. Importance of mechanical factors and applications in tissue engineering will be discussed.
