Fretting fatigue (FF) is probably the most insidious of all the fracture processes that affect enegineering components. A great amount of phenomenological data has been gathered in the past 40 years, and as many as 50 parameters are known to affect FF behaviour. This lecture briefly discusses some of the more frequently studied parameters such as fretting wear, fretting corrosion, relative slip between component surfaces, temperature and time effects, together with the more important aspects of component geometry, the surface traction force and the normal applied pressure between the asembled components, and finally, the cyclic and mean stresses that are common to all conventional fatigue (F) type studies.
